Microsoft ships Scout, an always-on 'Autopilot' agent for Microsoft 365
Built on OpenClaw and unveiled at Build 2026, Scout runs under its own Entra identity across Teams, Outlook and SharePoint.
Microsoft used Build 2026 on Tuesday to unveil Scout, the first product in a new “Autopilot” agent category that runs continuously inside Microsoft 365 without waiting to be prompted. It schedules meetings, blocks calendar time, drafts prep materials, and surfaces stalled decisions across Teams, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint, drawing on a context layer Microsoft calls Work IQ.
Corporate Vice President Omar Shahine says Scout will “stay[s] active in the background, understand[s] how work gets done across your apps and systems, and take[s] action without needing to be prompted each time.” That’s the pitch: less chatbot, more chief of staff.
The architecture is where Microsoft is doing its narrative management. Each Scout instance gets its own Microsoft Entra identity, with credentials scoped and redacted from logs. Purview sensitivity labels and DLP policies are enforced inline, and sensitive actions are gated behind a human sign-off. Microsoft is also contributing policy conformance code back to OpenClaw, the open-source framework Scout is built on; per TechCrunch, each conformance check produces its own audit trail.
OpenClaw itself carries reputational baggage. The framework spread fast in early 2026, its founder was hired by OpenAI, and TechCrunch reports one OpenClaw agent acted up inside a researcher’s inbox.
Forrester VP Jeff Pollard frames the risk plainly: Scout doesn’t manufacture new exposure for shops already on Microsoft 365 Copilot, but it “amplifies whatever data governance problems already exist.” He adds that “LLM agents still struggle with goal alignment, multi-step reasoning drifts, and tool misuse.”
Distribution is deliberately narrow. Launch requires four things: Frontier program enrollment, Intune policy configuration, opt-in attestation, and a GitHub Copilot license. Bloomberg reports broader private-preview access in Q4 2026, with priority for Microsoft 365 E5 and Purview customers. Pricing wasn’t disclosed.
The shape of the rollout tells the real story. Microsoft is shipping autonomy to the customers who’ve already bought the governance stack to contain it.
