Anthropic ships Claude Tag, an always-on Slack agent for Enterprise and Team
The Claude Code spinoff embeds a shared, multiplayer Claude into Slack channels. Anthropic says 65% of its product team's code already comes from the internal build.
Anthropic launched Claude Tag on Tuesday, a Slack-resident agent summoned by @Claude in any channel, in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers. Running on Claude Opus 4.8, it replaces the older Claude-in-Slack app and is framed in Anthropic’s launch post as “an evolution of Claude Code.”
The pitch is less about a new model than a new social surface. Where Claude Code lived in a terminal and most chatbots live in private windows, Tag deliberately performs in the open. Each channel gets its own Claude instance, with separate memories and tool permissions, so the marketing channel’s Claude doesn’t share context with engineering’s, and administrators can tightly control which data and tools each instance can reach.
Rob Seaman, general manager of Slack, called the design “making AI multiplayer. Instead of a private back-and-forth, Claude Tag shows up in the open.” That’s the actual product thesis: a model that’s legible to the room, not just the prompter.
Anthropic is also offering itself as the case study. Cat Wu, head of product for Claude Code and Cowork, told Fortune that 65% of the product team’s code is now created by the internal version of Tag. The number is doing a lot of narrative work, but it’s the kind of self-disclosure that resets the framing from “AI assistant” toward something closer to a labor-substitution claim.
Wu’s framing of the form factor is the more interesting tell. “A lot of the capabilities did exist, but actually the form factor of being able to tag it the same way that you would a coworker is really powerful,” she told Reuters. Translation: the moat isn’t the model, it’s the org chart slot.
Workspaces on the old Slack app have until August 3, 2026 to opt in and configure before Anthropic auto-migrates them. Wu told Reuters that Tag will expand to other platforms in the coming weeks. The Slack debut is a beachhead, not the destination.
