Zuckerberg concedes Meta's agent push has stalled, calls reorg not 'clean'
At a July 2 town hall, the CEO said four months of agentic AI work 'hasn't really accelerated in the way we expected' and that the 15,000-person restructuring fell short.
Mark Zuckerberg told Meta staff at a July 2 town hall that the company’s agentic AI program has stalled, conceding that “the trajectory of the agentic development over at least the last four months hasn’t really accelerated in the way that we expected.” Reuters obtained a recording. It wasn’t a speech built for external consumption.
The admission lands on top of a restructuring that touched roughly 15,000 employees: about 10% of the workforce laid off and some 7,000 reassigned into AI-focused groups, including the new Agent Transformation team. Zuckerberg said the bets on the new org structure “haven’t come to fruition yet,” acknowledged the reshuffle wasn’t clean, and told employees he’d made mistakes and would “almost certainly make more.” The cuts happened, he explained, because leadership “were worried that we weren’t going to move fast enough.”
That’s a striking framing. The reorg was a hedge against slowness, and it produced slowness.
The financial scaffolding around this makes the concession heavier. Meta raised the top end of its 2026 capex guidance to $145 billion in April, partly funded through a $25 billion bond sale. Superintelligence Labs, run by Alexandr Wang after his $14 billion hire from Scale AI, shipped Muse Spark in April, which CNBC noted was positioned as a “powerful foundation” rather than a frontier release. Zuckerberg singled out agentic shopping, using Meta’s social graph and content history, as a priority; no such agents have shipped on Facebook or Instagram. He gave staff a three-to-six-month window for more meaningful returns, pushing payoff to late 2026.
Markets have already priced some of this in. META is down 11.7% year to date through July 2 while the S&P 500 is up roughly 9%. The town hall reads less like a course correction than the moment a CEO tells his own building what the tape has been saying for six months.
