Cisco to hand every one of its 90,000 employees a personal AI agent this month

The end-of-July rollout lands the same quarter as ~4,000 layoffs, and puts Gartner's 40%-by-2026 forecast squarely on schedule.

By the end of July, every one of Cisco’s roughly 90,000 employees will have a personal AI agent, CFO Mark Patterson told Fortune, a rollout that arrives in the same quarter California WARN filings place the start of nearly 4,000 terminations on July 13. The company confirmed those cuts in May. Cisco also reported $15.8 billion in Q3 FY2026 revenue, up 12% year over year. The two announcements are being staged as unrelated. They aren’t.

Patterson’s finance org is the internal proof of concept. AI now drafts 80–90% of the mandatory MD&A section in Cisco’s public filings. A “CFO cockpit” synthesizes performance across products, geographies, and segments and recommends actions. A separate investor-relations tool benchmarks Cisco against competitors’ earnings calls and pre-empts likely analyst questions. Meanwhile Chief People Officer Kelly Jones has deployed an HR agent that fields questions like remaining leave balance and volunteers next steps, which is the same function that used to justify HR headcount.

The architecture is deliberate. “We feel like that’s the most efficient way is to build our own AI stacks, which will go out and query the different models based on the particular use case,” Patterson said. The stack runs largely on-premises, and each agent routes requests to the cheapest adequate model rather than defaulting to a frontier one. It’s a rebuke, quiet but pointed, of the per-seat frontier-API economics most vendors are selling.

The context is Gartner’s August 2025 forecast: 40% of enterprise applications will feature task-specific AI agents by end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025, moving, analyst Anushree Verma wrote, “from tools supporting individual productivity into platforms enabling seamless autonomous collaboration.” Gartner gave CIOs three to six months to set a strategy. The no-code layer where that strategy actually gets executed, platforms like Glean, Dust, and LemonLime, is where the next twelve months of enterprise AI will be won or lost.

Cisco is running the trust experiment in public. The employees receiving agents this month share a payroll with the ones being offboarded on the 13th.
