AMD puts $5B into Anthropic, wins a 2-gigawatt MI450 order

The Claude developer will deploy AMD Helios racks starting H1 2027 — and AMD becomes both supplier and shareholder.

AMD said Wednesday it’ll invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic and supply the Claude developer with up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, a deal that makes AMD both the vendor and a shareholder of one of its largest customers. The first gigawatt of Helios rack-scale systems is scheduled to come online in the first half of 2027.

Each Helios rack packs 72 MI455X accelerators, 31 TB of HBM4, and up to 2.9 FP4 exaFLOPS of inference compute, paired with EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm software. Anthropic already runs the current-generation MI355X. Bloomberg and Yahoo Finance report Anthropic will operate some of the new capacity itself and lease the rest through cloud providers or neoclouds.

The structural read is the interesting part. AMD’s arrangement with OpenAI, announced earlier, granted customer warrants for up to roughly 10% of AMD; the Anthropic deal is straight equity flowing the other direction, into a private company CNBC pegs at a $965 billion valuation with run-rate revenue that topped $47 billion in May. Anthropic is the second Helios customer AMD has announced in a week, following Microsoft’s Azure commitment on Monday.

For Anthropic, this is portfolio construction. Claude now runs across roughly six distinct silicon sources: AMD, Nvidia, Amazon Trainium under Project Rainier, 3.5 gigawatts of Google TPU capacity via Broadcom starting in 2027, and 300 megawatts rented from SpaceX’s Colossus 1.

“Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier,” said Tom Brown, Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer. “Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.”

The subtext is that no frontier lab wants to be a hostage to any single supplier, and no chipmaker wants to be a mere vendor to a customer growing this fast. Equity is how both sides stop that from happening.
