Stripe finalizes $7B+ deal to buy OpenRouter, taking the AI routing layer
The payments firm is paying roughly 50x annualized revenue for the gateway that already sends 46% of enterprise tokens to Chinese models.
Stripe agreed on Saturday to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, per Bloomberg, buying the inference gateway roughly 90 days after it closed a $1.3 billion post-money round. That’s a 5.4x markup on paper in a quarter, and about 50x The Information’s mid-2026 estimate of $140 million in annualized revenue. In March, Sacra and SiliconANGLE had the same number pegged near $50 million.
The multiple reads absurd until you look at what’s actually being bought. OpenRouter, founded in 2023 by former OpenSea co-founder Alex Atallah, who publicly called it “the AI equivalent of Stripe,” now moves around 25 trillion tokens per week across more than 400 models, skimming roughly a 5% markup on inference spend that crosses the platform. Eight million users as of May. A Series B of $113 million led by Alphabet’s CapitalG, with Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, and Menlo Ventures, took total capital past $150 million. The Wall Street Journal floated $10 billion in July; Stripe closed about 30% under that.
What Stripe is really acquiring is a policy-relevant piece of telemetry. Per CNBC data cited by Bloomberg, US-origin models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) accounted for roughly 70% of OpenRouter tokens in June 2025. A year later, that share was near 30%, with weekly enterprise volume to Chinese open-weight models, DeepSeek, Qwen, Tencent, MiniMax, Moonshot, peaking at 46%. DeepSeek alone routes 17.6%.
A 40-point swing in twelve months isn’t a vibe shift; it’s a substitution curve. Stripe, which confirmed API billing for OpenAI and Anthropic at Stripe Sessions 2026, now owns the meter reading both sides of it.
The historical rhyme is Visa’s 2007 IPO, when the network operator finally got valued above the banks whose transactions it carried. Toll booths compound; the traffic they measure is a separate business.
