Gen Digital's approach for GoDaddy puts Airo's small-business roadmap into play

A cybersecurity acquirer circling the registrar raises platform-continuity risk for founders running their marketing on Airo.

Gen Digital, the cybersecurity holding company behind Norton, Avast, and LifeLock, has made a preliminary takeover approach for GoDaddy, according to a Financial Times report picked up by Yahoo Finance. GoDaddy shares jumped as much as 11% on the news; Gen Digital’s fell nearly 8%. Yahoo Finance characterized the discussions as “at an early stage” with “no guarantee the approach will ultimately lead to a transaction.”

The market reaction tells you which side is thought to be getting the prize. GoDaddy’s Airo, launched as Airo.ai in beta in November 2025 with six specialized agents and “dozens more in development and new capabilities shipping weekly,” has become the most widely deployed agentic customer-growth stack in the small-business tier. Airo’s annualized bookings run rate went from $10 million in Q1 2026 to $50 million in Q2, a 5x jump in a single quarter, distributed across GoDaddy’s 20.5 million total customers.

Now read Gen Digital’s most recent 10-K, for the fiscal year ended April 3, 2026. Its business is organized around a Cyber Safety Platform and Trust-Based Solutions, anchored by the Avast integration and the MoneyLion acquisition. There’s no small-business marketing or web-presence line.

That’s the continuity question every founder running websites, SEO, social posts, and bookings through Airo has to sit with this week. A security-first acquirer buying a registrar with an accidental agentic-marketing hit doesn’t obviously keep investing in the agentic-marketing hit. It’s the pattern that produced Adobe’s quiet shutdown of Rilo earlier this month.

The practical read: keep your tooling separable from any single vendor’s agent framework, and start evaluating parallel options now, whether that’s HubSpot’s Marketing Studio 2.0 for B2B teams or the Meta business agent already closing sales on WhatsApp. Deals at this stage often collapse. Roadmaps rarely survive them intact when they don’t.
