Meta formalizes Business Agent inside a new enterprise division

Zuckerberg names MongoDB's CJ Desai to run Meta Enterprise Platform, packaging the WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger sales agent already used by over one million businesses.

Mark Zuckerberg on Monday named Meta Enterprise Platform as a dedicated division of the company and called it “the next major pillar of our business,” a framing that reorganizes several previously loose product threads (the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code) into a single commercial line aimed at businesses and developers.

To run it, Meta hired Chirantan “CJ” Desai, until now CEO and president of MongoDB, as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer reporting directly to Zuckerberg. MongoDB’s shares fell more than 17% on the news, and Dev Ittycheria returns as its interim CEO. Hiring a database-company chief executive to lead an AI platform is a legibility move: this is being built to be sold and supported like enterprise software, not shipped like a consumer feature.

The strategic anchor is already in the field. As of June, Meta said more than one million businesses were running a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger, handling product questions, appointments, lead qualification and sales inside the messaging surfaces where customers already are. That’s the installed base the new division inherits, and it’s also the constituency with the most to watch.

SQ Magazine, citing the Wall Street Journal, pegs the infrastructure behind all of this at more than $100 billion in 2026 AI spending. Investments at that scale don’t stay free at the edges.

SQ flagged four open questions worth sitting with: the pricing model, which Muse API models customers can actually reach, whether existing Business Agent users on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger get migrated onto the new platform, and when the first enterprise contracts land. SQ also reports Meta eventually wants the agents to run market research and connect to calendar tools.
