Notion lifts agent task limit to 24 hours, reshaping overnight work for small teams
The October 19 rebuild extends single-task runs from five minutes to more than a day — and small-team founders are the clearest beneficiaries.
Notion rebuilt its agent infrastructure on October 19, lifting the ceiling on a single task from five minutes to more than 24 hours. Co-founder Akshay Kothari framed the release as the sixth agent harness the company has shipped, which is itself a quiet admission that the earlier five were constrained to in-session work. New workspaces get the rebuild immediately; existing workspaces on November 2.
The strategic shift is the duration, not the tooling. A five-minute cap confines an agent to the kind of task a founder could plausibly do while waiting for coffee. A 24-hour window makes it a workbench for the overnight sprint: prospect research, content gap analysis, outreach drafts, competitive scans. That’s a different product category, aimed at a different buyer psychology, the small-team owner who’s run out of hours before running out of priorities.
The economics are self-reported. Notion says its new Auto model router matched Opus 5.5 and Astra across more than 20 common use cases at roughly 90% lower average cost in internal testing, that Custom Agent run costs fell about 30%, and that the app itself got up to 50% faster on web and mobile. None of this has been independently benchmarked.
The controls lag the capability, as usual. Agents now run on a dedicated computer and browser with a “Review for me” mode doing security checks before autonomous actions, per ChainCatcher. MCP connectors expanded from a few dozen tools earlier this summer to hundreds, per CellCog. Business and Enterprise seats get two monthly credit pools, 1,500 Standard and 500 Select, and neither rolls over, per Technobezz. The AI Command Center dashboard with spending limits is described as coming soon, per RuntimeWire. Which is to say: the agent can now work all night, but the usage dashboard that would tell you what it did can’t.
That gap is the running story of this cycle. OpenAI’s EU small-business usage data shows adoption outrunning oversight, and the customer-facing agent-identification norms Poppy is pushing exist precisely because the tooling is arriving faster than the etiquette. Notion just extended the shift by about 23 hours and 55 minutes.
