Anthropic's Claude Duet is the first big-lab agent built for the solo operator

Opus 5.5 under the hood, a morning brief, and 6,000 connectors — all aimed at the owner who is also the sales team.

Anthropic opened a waitlisted research preview of Claude Duet on Wednesday, a proactive agent running on Opus 5.5 and available to US Pro and Max subscribers on iOS, Android, and claude.ai. The framing is unusually specific for a frontier lab: Duet is pitched at people “with more on their plates than they can track,” which in practice means small-business owners who are also the sales team, the bookkeeper, and the person approving invoices at 10pm.

The seeded testers tell the story. Amin Ebrahimi, who runs the roughly 110-employee Shahs of Kabob in South Florida, uses Duet for accounting, customer support, and marketing. At Pro Homes, Jess Provencher’s Duet flagged a wrongly-dated property showing on her calendar without being asked. These aren’t enterprise pilots. They’re the exact owner-operator workflows that every productivity startup of the last decade has promised to fix and mostly hasn’t.

Mechanically, Duet sends a morning brief, checks connected apps every few hours, and taps more than 6,000 Claude Marketplace connectors, per WebProNews, including HubSpot deal history, QuickBooks, Stripe for unpaid invoices, Gusto, DocuSign, and Shopify store setup. Purchases route through a Stripe Link virtual card. Background work counts against existing plan limits.

Per 9to5Mac, Duet asks before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting anything. Anthropic, speaking to Reuters, concedes the agent “can misjudge urgency” and is weaker on personal tasks like booking tickets.

That hedging matters. The agent category has been haunted by demos that assumed the owner would supervise the output anyway. Duet instead assumes the owner isn’t watching, and designs the confirmation step around that absence. As we covered earlier this month, Anthropic has been pricing always-on agent work down toward the operator who can’t afford a sales ops hire. Duet is what that pricing is for.
