OpenAI opens ChatGPT Ads self-serve to SMBs in India, Europe, MENA as run rate hits $1B
Small teams can now buy intent-matched placements inside a 1-billion-user conversational surface without an agency.
OpenAI said Monday that ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days and that its self-serve Ads Manager is now available to advertisers in India, Europe, and MENA, extending a surface that already spans more than 40 countries and tens of thousands of advertisers.
The run-rate figure, which Forbes noted OpenAI announced Monday, is a snapshot rather than booked revenue. Read it as trajectory, not receipts. The structural news is the distribution one: Ads Manager, introduced in May as a beta, is now the default way in, which quietly cuts the traditional intermediaries (Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, WPP, and roughly 50 technology and measurement partners) out of the on-ramp for the small-team buyer.
The buying surface has also matured beyond the original CPM pilot. Cost-per-click bidding is live, and OpenAI says the platform now supports conversion optimization, geo-targeting, custom audiences, and measurement via the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API. Ads appear only inside ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go; Plus, Pro, and Enterprise remain ad-free, a tiering choice that protects the paid base while monetizing the conversational funnel where discovery, comparison, and decision collapse into one exchange.
Two data points do most of the persuasion in OpenAI’s post, and both are OpenAI-sourced. An ecommerce advertiser reported 3x ROAS over 28 days. A technology partner reported that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers. Neither is independently audited. Both, if directionally right, describe a channel closer to intent-stage search than to social feed.
The context is a broader repositioning by AI vendors, who are pointing their most valuable surfaces directly at the revenue function rather than through the CIO. The Claudeforce sales agent Salesforce and Anthropic launched last week pushed the same thesis from the CRM side. ChatGPT Ads is doing it from the demand side, and it’s doing it before Q4 planning locks.
