Optimizely ships Virtual Teammates, pushing marketing AI toward standing roles
Five role-specific coworkers, unveiled at Opticon, retain org context and run on schedules — resetting the bar small teams now compete against.
Optimizely unveiled Virtual Teammates at its Opticon conference on August 31, shipping five role-specific AI coworkers: a Chief of Staff, an SEO & AI Search Analyst, a Marketing Analyst, a Personalization Strategist, and a CRO Manager. Each carries a defined role, scoped permissions, and its own audit identity, and can be assigned recurring responsibilities triggered by time or events. The framing shift matters more than any single capability. Optimizely isn’t selling an agent you prompt; it’s selling a colleague who shows up.
The pitch is grounded in Optimizely’s own survey of more than 2,000 B2B marketing leaders, which found 81% personally switch between two or more disconnected AI tools each week, and 19% use four or more. That’s the tax the launch targets. “A Virtual Teammate learns how your organization works once, then keeps going,” said CEO Alex Atzberger. Teammates retain context so marketers “do not have to continually re-explain how their organization works.”
SVP of Product Kevin Li told AdExchanger his own Chief of Staff agent “checks his inbox every day at 5 am” to categorize overnight email, and described a six-person client team assigning a teammate to each member to offload Google Analytics and SEO monitoring. President Shafqat Islam framed the bet in blunter terms, saying Optimizely in a few years “may not be around, at least not in its current shape.”
That’s an unusually candid read on elite psychology inside the martech stack. The category is reorganizing around persistent, scheduled, role-based AI, and incumbents know it.
For small-team owners, the signal is commercial, not academic. Enterprise marketing now runs on always-on coworkers monitoring acquisition, content, and conversion continuously. That’s the capability bar. McKinsey’s 2026 research, meanwhile, finds small businesses stalled at 22% agent adoption, and coverage of Yext’s Corvo AI proactive small-business agent traces the same gap from the SMB side.
Optimizely’s stack solves this for teams that can afford the onboarding and integration lift. LemonLime markets a done-for-you service aimed at the same tool-switching tax for owner-led businesses, delivering finished customer-growth work at 9:00 AM local time. Same problem, different buyer.
