Google's Gemini agent moves into the inbox: an objective-driven coworker for small teams
Launched Thursday at Gemini at Work 2026, the universal agent accepts objectives, carries persistent memory, and gets its own Workspace email.
Google Cloud unveiled a universal Gemini agent on Thursday at Gemini at Work 2026 in Mountain View, and the framing was less about a new chatbot than about a new org chart. “You give it objectives, not just instructions. It plans the work, uses custom skills and tools, connects to your systems, and brings back something finished,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in the keynote. Each agent gets provisioned as a coworker, with its own Workspace account and an email address on an @agents.company.com domain.
That shift from instruction to objective is the actual product. The agent carries four memory tiers (session, semantic, procedural, and episodic), which means a multi-day sequence survives the founder closing the laptop. It connects to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and Snowflake, and can talk to any Model Context Protocol server, including Anthropic’s Claude. An Agent Gateway and Smart Routing sit underneath.
Entry today is a private preview. Broader rollout follows through Google Workspace Business and Enterprise, at no additional charge where Gemini Enterprise is available, which per TechCrunch now covers nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 and sits downstream of a Gemini user base above one billion monthly actives.
The marquee deployments are large: BNP Paribas rolling Gemini Enterprise to over 65,000 employees, SOMPO with more than 10,000 custom agents, plus Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper, Ulta Beauty, Wesfarmers, On, Shopify and PayPal. Vertical offerings include a Financial Services preview with over 50 foundational skills and a Legal product wired into NetDocuments and iManage.
For a small-team founder who already lives in Gmail, the practical read is that research-and-draft outbound prospecting is about to become ambient work inside the inbox, not a separate tool. That continues a pattern we’ve been tracking in how AI agents are reshaping the buyer’s first step and in this week’s compressed wave of AI sales-agent launches from Apollo, Gong and ZoomInfo. Microsoft spent two years turning Copilot into a sidebar. Google just gave the sidebar a payroll number.
