TikTok wires an AI shopping agent and native checkout into the For You feed
Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct launch into eligibility-based testing, with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe wired in through the Universal Commerce Protocol.
TikTok on Oct. 5 announced Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct, pushing a conversational AI agent and native one-click checkout into the For You feed under eligibility-based testing. The move collapses the step that leaks the most conversion for small DTC brands: the handoff to an external site.
Shopping Assistant renders as a chat window on a product page inside TikTok’s in-app browser, drawing its answers from merchant-supplied information to field questions on sizing, shipping and availability, per Superpower Daily. Context carries across the conversation. Buy Direct completes the purchase without leaving the app, using stored payment methods and saved addresses, with the brand still the merchant of record. PYMNTS reports it requires integration with TikTok’s new Universal Commerce Protocol, the shared ruleset the company is pitching to AI agents and merchant systems. Named launch partners are Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
David Kaufman, TikTok’s global head of monetization product partnerships, framed the stack as “AI, automation, and creativity to help advertisers improve performance while reducing effort.” TikTok also introduced Agentic Leads, which captures and qualifies prospects from an advertiser-defined Knowledge Base, extending the agent surface beyond retail into service businesses that don’t sell SKUs.
The scale case is the familiar one. TikTok’s Economic Impact Report credits the platform with $81 billion in US GDP contribution and 54 million Americans who say they bought a product after watching a TikTok video. eMarketer pegs TikTok Shop at roughly $15.8 billion in 2025 US sales, about 18% of US social commerce. The structural shift sits one layer deeper: catalog quality and product copy, not landing-page design, now determine whether the agent closes the sale.
It rhymes with Meta’s Muse rollout for small business and the agent surface it hands to owners. Two platforms, same bet: the owner’s job is feeding the agent, not operating the funnel.
Whether merchants adopt the required integration, and how far testing expands, is unresolved, Superpower Daily notes. BFCM is seven weeks out.
