Google's Universal Cart goes live in the US — small merchants are now gated by a feed
The cross-retailer cart launched Thursday across Search and Gemini. If a store isn't in UCP or its Merchant Center feed is stale, it isn't in the cart.
Google switched on Universal Cart across US Search and the Gemini app on Thursday, Oct. 15, giving American shoppers a single cross-retailer basket that saves items, tracks price drops, surfaces promo codes and Wallet perks, and checks out through Google Pay or a transfer to the merchant site. Suresh Ganapathy, Google’s senior director of product management for consumer shopping, announced the rollout in a company blog post, framing it as a draw on the Shopping Graph’s “60+ billion continually refreshed product listings.” TechCrunch read the move as Google’s answer to agentic-commerce pushes from Amazon and OpenAI.
The named launch merchants are telling: Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and, per Google, “many Shopify merchants.” Newegg integrated UCP in October, Digital Commerce 360 reported. YouTube and Gmail, both promised as surfaces at Google I/O in May, didn’t make the launch, PPC Land noted their absence.
For small B2C merchants the structural fact is quieter and harsher. Universal Cart runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which runs on Merchant Center feed data. Shopify stores were auto-enrolled between Sept. 18 and 22, matched to Merchant Center accounts by default. Everyone else, per Google’s March Merchant Center page, has to submit an interest form, carry the native_commerce attribute, work with a Google Pay–capable PSP, and expose a UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp running version 2026-04-08 or later. Cart transfer doesn’t work otherwise.
Feed hygiene isn’t theoretical here. In September, PPC Land documented listings running nine to ten days stale against Google’s stated 24-hour refresh. Heading into holiday peak, that gap is the difference between appearing in an agent-mediated buying journey and not. It’s the same gate TikTok’s shopping agent imposes from the opposite direction, and the same question Poppy is now asking merchants about whether they accept AI agents at all.
What Google didn’t disclose, PPC Land noted, is also where the leverage sits: merchant fees, the ranking logic for promo codes, cart-data sharing, and referral attribution. The 2003 Froogle-to-Shopping arc took a decade to monetize. This one’s priced into the launch; the invoice just hasn’t been itemized yet.
