Google puts Business Agent inside YouTube ads and opens UCP checkout tools for the holidays

Branded virtual sales associates move into video; cart transfer and checkout testing arrive in Merchant Center.

Google is pulling its branded “virtual sales associate” out of Search results and dropping it into video ads. In a September 16 post, Ashish Gupta, VP/GM of Merchant Shopping, announced that eligible U.S. retailers can sign up for a Business Agent for YouTube ads beta that lets viewers ask product questions inside the ad itself, without ever clicking through to a site.

Business Agent launched on Search on January 12, 2026 with four partners: Lowe’s, Michael’s, Poshmark, and Reebok. The YouTube beta is its first appearance off Search, and the strategic read is straightforward. Google is compressing the funnel from discovery to answer to purchase inside its own surfaces, and it’s doing it in time for Q4.

The checkout half of the stack is moving in parallel. Merchants using Merchant Center’s UCP integration hub can now enable cart transfer to the merchant site and run enhanced checkout-flow testing, with analytics promised soon. Google says Universal Commerce Protocol already powers direct checkout for “hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers.” Ignite Visibility’s October 23 roundup confirms Universal Cart is live for holiday season.

There’s a catch most small merchants haven’t registered. Per BigCommerce, UCP checkout eligibility is gated per SKU by a native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute. Products without it stay discoverable but not buyable inside Google’s agent surfaces, which is exactly where AI-driven purchase decisions are now landing.

Three Merchant Center moves this week: audit the product feed for completeness, apply for the Business Agent betas (Search and YouTube), and flag eligible SKUs with the UCP checkout attribute. Merchants who don’t will remain visible in listings while rival brands answer the question and close the sale.

The holiday calendar isn’t waiting for anyone’s roadmap review.
